Sharing the Love

I remember visiting Contact for the first time. I had come up with my youth group for a weekend trip. There were so many children running around that Sunday morning. I sat upstairs during children’s worship, several of the kids plopped themselves down beside me and quizzed me on who I was, where I was from, and why I was there. Walking into the Contact church I was a stranger, but walking out I had at least ten new best friends; I felt like I was already part of a new family. I was so filled with love. We started making trips to Tulsa to visit once a year, it was usually just a weekend trip but I always made sure my schedule was clear when that weekend rolled around. Over the years my love for this amazing place has continued to grow tremendously. I found myself driving up throughout the year just to worship at Contact because there would be times when the children from here would completely consume my thoughts.

This summer I was given the opportunity to serve as an intern at the Contact Mission Church. I am very much a homebody so my stomach dropped at the thought of leaving home for three months, but I prayed constantly about my decision. I felt like God was calling me to be in Tulsa. So I put all the nerves behind me and showed up. I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I hadn’t interned. God has uplifted me and encouraged me the whole way. I have fallen completely in love with the people of Contact.

I have been living with Ron and Judy Babbit for the summer, they have shown me what I would imagine a reflection of Christ would look like. They have treated me like part of their family and when it comes time for me to say my goodbyes, I can assure you I will miss the love and hospitality they have shown me (along with Judy’s great cooking, Coon dog, and Ron’s crazy word slang). The Babbit’s are only a couple of the amazing people I’ve come to know. I’ve had the privilege of serving the Lord alongside four other women, I’m so thankful God has allowed my path to cross with theirs this summer. Brooke, Ashley, Audrey, and Julia, thank you for encouraging me, lifting me up, and for sharing your love for our God with me these past three months. Nothing would have been possible without the incredible Contact staff, and for them I will be eternally grateful.

In the middle of June we went to ‘Camp Mo’, a middle school summer camp. Now If you were to just peek into the world of Camp Mo you would see cabins with no air conditioning, two minute showers, hundreds of mosquito bites, bunk beds without  mattresses, and lots of sweaty kids. But if you were to stop and experience the whole week you would see so much more. You would see early morning runs up red hill, bible studies, lots of slime, and fishing trips. You would see the kids start to build relationships with the staff, you would hear giggles late at night and every once in awhile you would catch a glimpse of a flashlight run across your bed, and you would see everyone take a step out of their comfort zones. But most importantly you would get to experience and take part in kids learning to know our savior, Jesus Christ.

“I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content. -Philippians 4:11

The past three weeks we’ve had a kindergarten-5th grade VBS, ‘Camp Contact’. I was the shepherd for the kindergarten-first grade girls...THE YELLOW GROUP. Getting to know every girl in my color group a little more each day was one of my favorite parts about camp.Watching them get excited day after day to learn a new bible story was indescribable. I got to watch all of my girls grow throughout the weeks; they lead prayers, acted out bible stories, grew to love their big buddies they were assigned each week, and they sang....really loud.I’m so grateful I got to build so many relationships with not only my little girls from the yellow group, but all of the big buddies that volunteered their time to hangout with these precious children.
